Focus And Self Control

Focus And Self Control

In each and every one of us lies a treasure trove of skills and abilities that are waiting to be tapped. In order to effectively channelize these abilities and direct them towards the attainment of goals, one requires high levels of focus as well as the ability to regulate one’s emotions, urges and behavior accordingly. Therefore, focus and self control are the two main components without which any kind of planning and execution will not yield the desired results. The ability to focus or direct one’s attention towards a task forms the very basis of critical thinking without which it is impossible for effective cognitive functioning. The ability to focus in turn gives us the ability to observe, analyze and solve problems. This also helps us learn to control our actions and desires; and use our skills in a clear and systematic manner. Skills like focus and self control are not difficult to develop and can be learnt at any age and time through various structured activities and tasks.

Perspective Taking

Perspective Taking

Encountering and solving problems is an integral part of our lives. And we being social animals are almost always faced with problems involving others. Therefore, the ability to resolve conflicts through peaceful means without hurting the feelings of any party involved is considered a valuable asset and an important virtue. But the very first step of effective problem solving and conflict resolution is to try and understand what the other person is feeling and thinking and then putting yourself in his/her place and viewing the situation through his perspective. This function, which goes beyond empathy, helps you delve into the other individual’s mindset and lets you see what the situation looks like from his/her point of view. In order to be able to do this, one has to be unbiased, rational, flexible and have good self control. All these elements put together form ‘perspective taking’ and developing this skill set helps one grow into a compassionate, empathetic and balanced individual who will be able to deal with any given situation, whether personal or professional, more effectively.

Communicating

Communicating

Communication is a vital part of all our lives. And yet we fail to understand its importance and the monumental role it plays in shaping our lives. Communication is not just a process; it goes beyond words and language and encompasses a wide spectrum of elements like thoughts, ideas, feelings, signs, symbols and much more. This process first starts with understanding what message one wants to convey. Once that is done, one has to choose from the various elements to transmit a clear and specific message to the other party. Only after our communication is understood by the others; can we expect a clear and specific reply from them. This process of sending and receiving is a complicated one and encounters many hurdles and obstacles in its way and this often leads to one’s message getting distorted which in turn leads to poor communication. Therefore, it is very important for us to treat communication not just as a process but as a skill and try and enhance it in order to better the quality of our communications. Only by doing this; can we improve and strengthen relationships and reduce communication errors and confusion.

Making Connections

Making Connections

Learning is an ongoing process that begins at birth and goes on till one’s last breath. We are bombarded by different stimuli throughout our day and our brain is constantly assimilating this information. But at the very core of learning lies the ability to use our previous knowledge in order to organize and understand new information, to make associations and form connections, to decide what is relevant and irrelevant and to decide what is similar and what is different. Without this skill; all knowledge is ineffective and unproductive. This skill is what is called ‘making connections’ and it helps one go beyond just knowing information to being able to use that information appropriately. Most of the times, when we grasp a phenomenon, it is because we have been able to successfully make a connection which gives us clarity and in depth understanding of it. Making connections helps us develop the abilities to relate one thing to another, to discriminate and generalize whenever necessary and to categorize information efficiently which makes it easily accessible for future use. Developing this skill also helps us make multiple and unusual connections, which in turn leads to high productivity and creativity.

Critical Thinking

Critical Thinking

It is often said that we are defined by the choices that we make. But in today’s day and age, the options available to us are innumerable and choosing the appropriate option is a herculean task. But there are certain skills, which when developed, can help one make choices and solve problems effortlessly, systematically and logically. Good decisions cannot be made without being rational, disciplined, honest, open minded and aware and all these components put together form the very important skill called ‘critical thinking’. Critical thinkers are those who approach every problem with rationality and avoid making snap judgments. They don’t view the world as just black or white and delve into the layers of the problem with an analytical mind. It is a disciplined process that involves applying the principles of logic and reasoning to arrive upon a sound, valid and reliable conclusion. This enables one to expand their own knowledge base and take into consideration perspectives other than theirs. It helps in effective problem solving and makes one flexible and eager, which are very important aspects of being an active and true learner.

Taking On Challenges

Taking On Challenges

We are often taught that challenges are a part and parcel of our lives. But how many of us willingly take on these challenges rather than avoiding them or simply dealing with them? Challenges present themselves to us in many different forms, some may be inevitable while some may be situational and some we may take on knowingly. In every case, it becomes important for us to understand the challenge well and judge accordingly what steps must be taken to meet with it. A prerequisite to be open to challenges is to be open minded and positive and view every challenge as an opportunity to learn something new and valuable. One has to understand that a 100 % success rate is impossible to achieve and one is bound to fail at some point of time. This helps one develop the right combination of sportsmanship and competitiveness and teaches one to be fair, honest and sincere. Taking on challenges gives us more awareness and insight about ourselves and a better understanding of our abilities. It teaches us to deal with different emotions like anger, jealousy, disappointment, frustration etc more effectively and view every experience as a positive one.
Such individuals are less likely to avoid opportunity out of fear of failure, and thus ultimately are more likely to succeed.

Self Directed, Engaged Learning

Self Directed, Engaged Learning

It is only through learning and exploring that we realize our own true potential. But very often, we tend to rely on external incentives to motivate us to learn. We tend to learn because we have to and not because we want to. In doing so, we end up depriving ourselves of vast knowledge and experience which restricts our growth, both personal and professional. Self directed engaged learning refers to an approach wherein the individual takes the initiative to understand his learning needs, formulate learning goals, identify resources for learning, select and implement learning strategies, and evaluate learning outcomes. It involves taking responsibility of your own learning and employing effective self regulating and self monitoring strategies to maximize quality learning. Self directed learners are motivated by internal incentives like the need to grow, the satisfaction of accomplishment, the desire to achieve and the urge to learn and don’t have to rely on external ones. This inculcates in us the confidence to be prepared for any of life’s challenges and adapt and change with the changing times. It drives us to persevere and grow in all spheres of life and be curious, open minded and flexible.

Know Thy Self

Know Thy Self

Adolescence is the bridge between childhood and adulthood. It is the age of changes and changes bring with them confusion and questions. It is also the age of puberty that ushers in physiological, physical and emotional changes. Adolescents begin to look, sound and feel different, they begin to feel conscious of all these changes they are undergoing and become awkward and confused. Hormonal changes can also lead to mood swings, uncontrollable tempers, periods of depression and much more. These changes not only affect the adolescents but also the people around them. Many a times, children enter into this phase without being aware of or prepared for the various changes that are to come. This leads to extreme confusion and embarrassment and can hamper one’s day to day functioning. Therefore, it is important to provide them with a free and open platform where they can discuss and share all their questions and doubts without fear. This can make the process much easier and help them cope with the pressures of society without losing their identity.
